A Frugal Moment

With the following five daily habits, you can make a big difference with small changes.

Now these tips will not make you rich overnight (that would be wonderful wouldn’t it?) but they will you get in the right mindset and set you up to stay on track.

Let’s get into it!

Check Balances

Get into the habit of checking your account balances daily.

I know it may seem pointless to check so frequently, however It only takes a minute, and helps you see if you have upcoming bills or payments coming due, and plan accordingly.

Also, by checking accounts regularly you can keep track of any funny business, such as fraud or possible scams

Track Progress

Another way to save money everyday is to track your spending.

If daily tracking is too disheartening at the start, switch to weekly or bi-weekly tracking.

Keep track of everything you spend, and how much money you have coming in after taxes.

Keep your eye on the prize by logging your spending on paper, with a ledger, or visual tracker.  You can also use an app on your phone or in a spreadsheet.

Just the act of tracking your expenses brings awareness and fosters motivation.

Cook At Home

By taking the time to make meals at home, with simple recipes that require only a few ingredients you will save so much.

You can save more on groceries by using what you have on hand first.

Check your fridge, pantry and freezer and see what needs to be used up.

Make a list of remaining ingredients needed to compliment your on hand items, then hit the grocery stores.

When there is a sale on your go-to items, feel free to stock up. (Store that extra meat and bread in the freezer, for later use).

Limit Temptations

Know your triggers and do your best to limit going to the stores, or restaurants where you tend to spend the most.

Simple ways to avoid temptations:

  • Switch up your route to work and avoid driving by your favourite coffee shop or breakfast spot
  • Do not go to the store to browse.
  • Make a list and stick with it
  • Wait to purchase, especially impulse buys, or clear wants (24 hours – 3 days)
  • Limit yourself to a budget
  • Use cash only (when you run out, no more buying)
